Ten other inmates were also taken to hospital, four of whom were in critical condition, and some inmates reportedly tried to escape unsuccessfully.
Iranian authorities have tried to assert that The chaos at Evin prison is not related to the ongoing protests. State media detailing the violence was attributed to a group of prisoners having a fight while practicing sewing.
The report contradicts claims that the fire was likely caused by an explosion inside the prison. The former prisoner and human rights activist who was held in Evin Prison said: Usually all prisoners are returned to their camp and their vocational training ends after sunset.
Joseph Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security and Vice-President of the European Commission, said he had expressed serious concern for the Iranian foreign minister. and asked for utmost transparency in the aftermath of the prison fires and the apparent violence. He stressed that the Iranian authorities have a responsibility for the lives of all detainees. This includes human rights activists and EU citizens.
