Afghanistan's death toll from the latest earthquake has risen to more than 900, numbers are still uncertain. While rescue operations are ongoing
Afghanistan's Deputy Minister forโหลด slotxoDisaster Management, Sharafuddin Muslim, said: Last night's 6.1-magnitude earthquake was the worst quake in two decades, with more than 920 confirmed dead and more than 600 injured.
Most of the deaths were in the eastern city of Paktika, the worst-hit area. At least 225 people have been reported dead and more than 200 injured, while Kosk has reported 25 deaths and 90 injuries.
Salahuddin Ayub, an official from the Afghan Interior Ministry, told reporters that “The number of deaths and injuries is likely to increase. Because some of the affected areas were remote villages located in the mountains. It takes time to gather more details.”
The quake happened last night while many people were sleeping. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was 44 km southeast of Afghanistan's city of Kost, with a 6.1-magnitude tremor at a depth of about 51 km.
The European Mediterranean Earthquake Center (EMSC) said strong tremors from the quake could be felt as far as Kabul. The quake is located about 200 kilometers from the epicenter, and residents within 500 kilometers of the site of the quake in three countries - Afghanistan, Pakistan and India - were able to feel the tremor.
